Horological Accessories, from Pocket Watches to Wristwatches:

The 16th century saw the emergence of the first miniature clocks, which were referred to as pocket watches. To make it easier to carry this new object, people would fasten it to their jacket or shirt while storing it in a small inner pocket, commonly known as a "gousset."

Thus, the pocket watch was born around 1500, with increasing production to accompany the growing use of this new timepiece. The first pocket watch models were round and bulky. It wasn't until the 1550s that the flat shapes we know today began to appear. However, these early pocket watches lacked a protective glass. Only the hinged cover served as the protective shield for the watch movement, with the winding crown and time-setting knob positioned at 12 o'clock in the ring. Very quickly, the pocket watch became popular with the upper class, so much so that by the end of the 1600s, it had become an essential part of a true gentleman's attire. The pocket watch, as we know it today, was created in 1882 by Audemars Piguet. The venerable house of Brassus specialized in this type of watch until 1893, before shifting its focus to wristwatches.

The supremacy of the wristwatch over the pocket watch is a recent development. Until the early 20th century, the most common type of watch was the pocket watch. However, the two types of timepieces coexisted for several centuries, with the wristwatch primarily intended for women. At that time, watchmakers also produced pendant watches for women, worn around the neck with a chain or ribbon.

The first historical reference to a wristwatch dates back to 1571 when the Earl of Leicester gave Queen Elizabeth I a bracelet with a small watch. In 1722, a Parisian watchmaker is credited with the mass production of several wristwatches, and in 1790, watchmaker Jaquet-Droz began selling wristwatches in Geneva. However, the first famous wristwatch was created by Abraham-Louis Breguet, who in 1811 presented a complication wristwatch to Queen Caroline Murat of Naples. This model, called "Reine de Naples," is still part of Breguet's catalog today.

At that time, men's wristwatches were considered eccentric, even effeminate. They were primarily commissioned by the military, who appreciated the practicality of reading the time while on the move. During World War I, Omega was the main producer of military wristwatches, which were equipped with a perforated metal grid over the dial. This model was also used by some troops of the American Expeditionary Force. The Great War popularized the wristwatch, leading to the near extinction of the pocket watch by the early 1930s.

Since then, a whole range of horological accessories has developed to the delight of fine watch enthusiasts. From automatic watch winders to desk clocks, Kronos 360 offers a selection of quality accessories.
